7 Quotes from Charles Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born in Kelvedon, England in 1834. He began preaching as a teenager and his energy, charisma, and down-to-earth approach soon had him preaching to tens of thousands. Though he received little formal education, all his life he valued learning and books—especially those by Puritan writers—and his personal library eventually exceeded 12,000 volumes.

Spurgeon was at times criticized by the newspapers for his “dramatic flair”, but he responded with, “I am perhaps vulgar, but it is not intentional, save that I must and will make people listen. My firm conviction is that we have had enough polite preachers.”

He established alms houses and an orphanage, and his Pastor’s College, opened in 1855, continues to this day.

After his death in January 1892, some 100,000 lined the streets as a funeral parade two miles long followed his hearse to the cemetery. Flags flew at half-staff and shops and pubs were closed.

Charles Spurgeon still has so much to say to us today about the gospel. You could spend all day reading inspiring quotes from this amazing preacher, but here are 7 short quotes to get you started.

1. “Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.”

2. “Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.”

3. “True prayer is neither a mere mental exercise nor a vocal performance. It is far deeper than that – it is spiritual transaction with the Creator of Heaven and Earth.”

4. “A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.”

5. “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”

6. “You will never glory in God till first of all God has killed your glorying in yourself.”

7. “A Jesus who never wept could never wipe away my tears.”
