In Mark 14:12–31, Jesus reveals that the cross is not a tragedy outside God’s control, but the sovereign fulfillment of his saving plan. As Jesus establishes the Lord’s Supper and foretells the disciples’ failure, we see our weakness contrasted with the faithfulness of our strong Savior.
In Mark 14:1–11, we see a striking contrast between betrayal and devotion. Judas was close to Jesus, yet betrayed him, while an unnamed woman poured out a costly and extravagant gift in worship. What makes her devotion so beautiful? She understood that Jesus was going to the cross to die for her. Her costly gift was a response to his even greater gift of himself. We live for him because he died for us.
What is happening in our world, and where is it all going? In Mark 13, Jesus gives us the answer—not so that we can predict the date of his return, but so that we can know how to live faithfully until he comes. As history moves toward the return of Christ, Jesus calls his people to stand firm, reject deception, refuse anxiety, remain watchful, and stay awake.
Jesus sees beyond outward appearances and religious performance. In Mark 12:38–44, He contrasts the hypocrisy of the scribes with the quiet, wholehearted faith of a poor widow who gives everything she has. But ultimately, the passage points us to Jesus, who held nothing back and gave His life for us.
In Mark 12:13–37, Jesus exposes the empty religion of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes, revealing that outward morality and religious knowledge are no substitute for a transformed heart. True faith is found in repentance, wholehearted devotion, and trust in Christ.
In Mark 12:1–12, Jesus tells the Parable of the Tenants, exposing false religion, revealing God’s sovereign plan, and announcing that His kingdom is given to all who trust in Christ. Discover what it means to live as faithful stewards, finding hope in His providence, even in suffering.
In Mark 11, Jesus boldly reveals His authority over Jerusalem, the temple, and all of God’s promises. Discover why empty religion can never save, how Christ fulfills the Old Testament, and why the only hope for every person is to repent, believe, and follow Him.
As Jesus makes His final journey to Jerusalem, He encounters Bartimaeus – a blind beggar who sees more clearly than the crowds around him. His response to Jesus becomes a model of true discipleship, showing us what it means to hear, believe, and follow Christ.
Disciples of Jesus look for opportunities–whether in the church, home or work–to set aside their own needs, desires and preferences and place a higher value on the needs of others. Do you use your power to subjugate or serve? What would your marriage, family and workplace look like if you used your power and authority for the highest and best of others, rather than yourself.
How much do your possessions hold you or hinder you on your journey to your heavenly home? Money, wealth and possessions can be wonderful tools for the Christian, but they are relentless taskmasters if you cling to them as your saviour.
