This Wednesday at 7pm, join us for our Ash Wednesday service at St. George’s. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting, which parallels the temptation of Jesus. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes in the form of a cross on the forehead as a reminder of human mortality, and as a sign of repentance to God. The shape of the cross on our foreheads hints at the good news of Christ, in whom we have been given ‘a crown of beauty instead of ashes’ (Isa 61:3). The ashes used are gathered from the burning of the palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday.
