8 Quotes on the Holy Spirit

This Sunday is Pentecost in the church calendar – the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus’ disciples with tongues of fire (Acts 2). Pentecost is remembered as the birth of God’s church, the day that the Lord empowered His people, through his Holy Spirit, to carry the gospel to all families of the earth (Acts 1:8). This same Holy Spirit dwells in His church today, revealing to us the glory of Jesus and leading us into all truth (John 16:13). Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus can now dwell in our hearts by faith (Eph 3:16-17), and we can abide in Him and He in us (1 John 4:13).

There is so much to say about the Holy Spirit, but for now let’s just look at 8 amazing quotes on the Holy Spirit by some of Christianity’s greatest theologians.

1. “A sinner can no more repent and believe without the Holy Spirit’s aid than he can create a world.” – Charles Spurgeon

2. “Those in whom the Spirit comes to live are God’s new Temple. They are, individually and corporately, places where heaven and earth meet.” – N.T. Wright

3. “In other words, the Holy Spirit is the delight that the Father and the Son have in each other, and He carries in Himself so fully the essence of the Father and the Son that He Himself stands forth as a third Person in His own right.” – Jonathan Edwards

4. “The Spirit is the first power we practically experience, but the last power we come to understand.” – Oswald Chambers

5. “The purpose, the main function of the baptism with the Holy Spirit, is . . . to enable God’s people to witness in such a manner that it becomes a phenomenon and people are arrested and are attracted.” – Martin Lloyd Jones

6. “The Spirit of God is given to the true saints to dwell in them, as his proper lasting abode; and to influence their hearts, as a principle of new nature, or as a divine supernatural spring of life and action.” – Jonathan Edwards

7. “The Christian’s life in all its aspects—intellectual and ethical, devotional and relational, upsurging in worship and outgoing in witness—is supernatural; only the Spirit can initiate and sustain it. So apart from him, not only will there be no lively believers and no lively congregations, there will be no believers and no congregations at all.” – J. I. Packer

8. “Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.” – Corrie Ten Boom
